Five Tips to Get Started

  1. First, spend some time becoming aware of how your parents are functioning in their homes. Then, at a quiet point, share any observations you've made with your parent(s) and find out how they feel. Mom, it seems you're concerned about driving at night, or Dad, I noticed the lights are out on the back porch; is taking care of repairs around the house becoming overwhelming? You want to listen to their concerns as well as share yours.

  2. When talking with your parents, be respectful and understand that they don't want to lose control over their own lives. Let them know that you're talking with them out of love and concern for their future.

  3. After that first chat, research CCRCs in your area or near your parent's home. Consider your parents' passions and interest and evaluate if the community is a right fit. Perhaps your Dad enjoys woodworking or canoeing – does the community offer this or is there a lake close by? Do they offer a Bonsai club or a choir for your Mom?

  4. Now, visit top candidates with your parent. Find out what the entrance fees and monthly fees are; what programs and activities do they offer; the extent and quality of on-site health care; whether dining, transportation and housekeeping are included; if pets are welcome; and what amenities are available surrounding the community.

  5. Ask the community for references from other adult children, as well as residents. Take time to talk with these people about their experiences; many will tell you that they wished they had moved sooner!
